Baldur’s Gate 3 console players with more than 100 mods will need to chill out a little bit

A hotfix limiting mod use in Baldur’s Gate 3 is on its way to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game, developer Larian Studios announced on Nov. 14. But the studio says it’s all in the name of “prevent[ing] instability, reduced performance, and crashes.”

The upcoming patch, which has yet to receive a release date, will restrict the number of mods Baldur’s Gate 3 console players can enable to around 100, a Larian spokesperson told Polygon. Saves with more than 100 mods at the time the hotfix drops will be rendered temporarily unplayable until a follow-up restores access. That said, returning to the game saves in question will still require uninstalling mods to satisfy the new limits.

Larian promised more information soon, likely shared through the official Baldur’s Gate 3 website.

This isn’t the first time Baldur’s Gate 3 on consoles had to make unique concessions not found on PC. The massively popular role-playing game was pseudo-console exclusive to PlayStation 5 for three months, not because Sony had made any sort of deal with Larian but because Microsoft’s required feature parity between games on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S was keeping it off the former while the developers struggled to get split-screen co-op working on the latter. Microsoft eventually relented and allowed Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox Series S without it.

While the mod situation is obviously a bummer, mod support on consoles is still relatively uncommon. Feel free to keep making Baldur’s Gate 3 your own, but have some restraint. PlayStation and Xbox still have a long way to go towards offering the same amount of freedom as PCs.
