‘Under Construction’ case walkthrough, hints, and solution in Rise of the Golden Idol

“Under Construction” is the second case of Chapter 1 in Rise of the Golden Idol, taking place right after “Academic Impact.”

As with all of our Rise of the Golden Idol case guides, our goal here is to provide a hint-based experience that will lead you to the solution without automatically showing you how to solve it. We’ll start out with small hints for the puzzle, escalate to bigger ones, and eventually just spell out the answer if it’s still not clicking for you. We’ve separated our tiered hints and answers with in-game art, but be wary of scrolling farther than you intend.

In this Rise of the Golden Idol guide, we’ll walk you through the “Under Construction” case, including hints and the full solution for the names, vehicles, and events puzzles.

Under Construction names

Figuring out everyone’s name is the biggest hurdle to Under Construction, and you have eight different people (six living, two dead) to identify.

First hint

• An item revealing the name of the inspector with a hat is on his person.
• An item revealing the name of the inspector with glasses is on his person.
• A character in the scene says the name of the reporter.
• The name of the crushed construction worker is revealed via another character’s dialogue.
• The first name and last name for all of the construction workers are found in different places and must be matched up.
• The name of the dead man in the pipe is revealed in an item on his person.

Second hint

• Both inspector’s names are on their badges, in their respective pockets.
• The reporter says her own name as she signs off on her report.
• The reporter reveals the full name of the crushed foreman in her news report.
• The two construction workers on the left side of the screen reveal each other’s first names in their dialogue.
• You must match up the same two construction workers with their machines in order to determine their last names via the note to the foreman.
• The last name of the construction worker speaking to the inspector is revealed by the inspector in the hat. His first name is located inside his machine.
• The dead man in the pipe’s name is printed on dog tags in his inventory.

Solution

Listed from left to right, starting with the first row, here are the names of all the characters.

• The Foreman’s name is: Joel Gregson.
• The left-most construction worker is: Ted Werter.
• The short construction worker is: Monty Totsky.
• The mustachioed construction worker is: Bill Jenkins.
• The inspector in the hat is: Roy Samson.
• The inspector with the glasses is: Ian Worth.
• The news woman is: Miranda Meadows.
• The dead man with the red eyes is: Luke Brown.

Under Construction vehicles

Vehicles are the first unique problem to solve in one of the case levels, and you’ll be asked to place each construction worker with the device they’re assigned to. We find this easiest to do after learning everyone’s name.

First hint

• Check the foreman’s pocket to learn who drives two of the three vehicles
• Check the control rooms of two of the vehicles to learn something about the drivers

Second hint

• There’s a picture of one of the drivers in the left-most vehicle
• The driver of the right-most vehicle keeps a mug in his machine that has his name on it
• The machine names can be derived from the attachments at the end of their arms (i.e. a wrecking ball)
• The Foreman is not one of the machine operators

Solution

Listed from left to right, starting with the first row, here are the machines and their operators.

• The left-most vehicle is: excavator, driven by Ted Werter.
• The middle-most vehicle is: demolisher, driven by Monty Totsky.
• The right-most vehicle is: cutter, driven by Bill Jenkins.

Under Construction events

The event puzzle requires nine words to solve in this vignette.

First hint

• The first and second words are the name of the “murderer”
• The third word is the name of the machine used in the accident
• The fourth and fifth words reveal the object involved in the murder
• The sixth and seventh words are the first victim’s first and last name
• The seventh and eight words are the second victim’s first and last name

Second hint

• The vehicle positions will tell you which machine (and driver) is responsible for the accident
• The driver responsible is being consoled by a coworker about the accident
• The object used in the murder is still on top of the victim
• The first victim is the foreman
• The second victim is the man with the red eyes

Solution

Monty Totsky used the demolisher on the sewage pipe. This resulted in the death of Joel Gregson.

Following this, the body of Luke Brown was found unexpectedly.
