Mortal Kombat 1’s Ghostface looks absolutely stabulous in action

Scream’s Ghostface is coming to Mortal Kombat 1 next week. On Wednesday, developer NetherRealm Studios gave MK fans a longer look at the masked serial killer’s gameplay, highlighting his stab-stab-stabbing action, his extremely meta Fatality, and his Animality.

Ghostface’s attacks in MK1 are almost all knife-based, fittingly. He appears to have plenty of rushdown moves and possibly some command grabs, plus a few tricks lifted from the Scream movies — like a funny little shimmy while laying prone so he can stab opponents in the ankles. Ghostface can also call in a second Ghostface — and in his Fatal Blow, a third Ghostface — to effectively teleport and to ensnare his enemies.

We’ve already seen Ghostface’s first Fatality, in which two of the killers gang up on their victim to slice their head in half. The kombatant’s second Fatality is much more meta, in Scream franchise fashion. We see a Fatality start to play out on screen, then the camera pulls out through a television monitor to show us that Johnny Cage is playing Mortal Kombat 1 at home alone in the dark. Cage is then attacked by another Ghostface, who splatters his blood across the TV screen.

Ghostface’s Animality is also revealed. He transforms into a vulture and stabs at his victim’s chest with his beak.

Scream’s Ghostface comes to Mortal Kombat 1 on Nov. 19, as part of the game’s Khaos Reigns expansion. He’ll be available à la carte on Nov. 26. Ghostface will eventually be joined by the Terminator T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Conan the Barbarian, the game’s next two guest characters.

Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. The expansion continues the multiversal story of MK1 and adds three new fighters — Noob Saibot, Cyrax, and Sektor — and three guest characters.
