Yesterday, D&D Beyond announced it will start selling the sourcebook for The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying by acclaimed Swedish tabletop role-playing game publisher Free League. Though its announcement on D&D Beyond claims this setting guide is a “brand new adaptation,” it was published last year, and is based on the second edition of Free League’s One Ring TTRPG by Francesco Nepitello. New or not, the award-winning ruleset, adapted for fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons, is among the most popular tabletop role-playing games set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s world, and it can now be seamlessly integrated into D&D’s bespoke virtual tabletop.

The 240-page tome includes six classes, 12 subclasses, 14 species, and 42 unique feats, which are available for use in D&D Beyond’s character creation tool. Free League crafted rules for journeying to evoke the adventures of the original books, which inspired the modern fantasy genre and the game of D&D itself. The setting guide also has adventure paths for parties levels 1-10, with new maps and monsters that are compatible with D&D Beyond’s tactical VTT, Maps, which just entered beta testing

The sourcebook’s mechanics were tailored specifically for Dungeons & Dragons’ fifth edition. (Not the latest 2024 update, though with backward compatibility, players should be able to use the Lord of the Rings Roleplaying book in their 2024 games.) The D&D Beyond edition of the book is currently available at a discounted price of $29.99, with the original book available for just over $50 on Free League’s site.
