Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver remasters leak ahead of Sony’s State of Play

Two of Crystal Dynamics’ early Legacy of Kain games are getting remastered in a new collection called Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remastered, according to new details leaked via Sony’s PlayStation Network. The collection, co-developed by Aspyr, was previously outed at San Diego Comic-Con this summer thanks to some statues.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remastered will let players experience the conflict between Kain and vampire-turned-wraith Raziel in its original form or with remastered graphics, according to a product description from PSN. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remastered will be released on Dec. 10 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, a trailer for the collection reveals.

More details on the remasters may be coming later today at Sony’s State of Play livestream.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver was released in 1999 for the original PlayStation and later ported to Sega Dreamcast and Windows PC. Sequel Soul Reaver 2 was released for PlayStation 2 and Windows PC in 2001. Both games starred Raziel as the playable character in his quest to exact revenge on his master Kain, star of the first game in the franchise, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2 were developed by Tomb Raider studio Crystal Dynamics, and both were directed by Amy Hennig, who later went on to work at Naughty DogElectronic Arts, and Skydance Interactive.

Earlier this year, Crystal Dynamics and Aspyr released Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, a lavish overhaul of the first three Tomb Raider games. Crystal Dynamics owner Embracer Group said in 2022, after acquiring Eidos, Crystal Dynamics, and the team at Square Enix Montreal (and their IPs Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain, and Thief), that it saw “great potential […] in remakes, remasters, spinoffs, as well as transmedia projects” based on those franchises — meaning more classic remasters are likely to come.
