Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree’s hated final boss gets nerfed at last
FromSoftware rolled out a new update for Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree on Wednesday, and the biggest target is the game’s final boss, who has been hit with a significant nerf. That change will likely come as great relief to Elden Ring fans who struggled with Promised Consort Radahn/Radahn, Consort of Miquella, one of the game’s most challenging boss battles.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree latest patch notes, for version 1.14 of the game, lead with balance changes to Radahn, which are officially described thusly:
Changed the action pattern when the battle starts.
Adjusted some attack moves.
Decreased the damage of some attacks.
Decreased stamina damage of some attacks.
Decreased the attack range of some non-weapon-based attacks.
Improved the visibility of some attack effects.
In practice, this translates to multiple moves being adjusted, which makes them easier to dodge and gives players extended opportunity to counterattack Radahn across his two phases. One of the most notable nerfs affects Promised Consort Radahn’s cross-slash attack, during which he swings each of his swords individually, then slashes at the player with both. Radahn’s cross-slash is now much slower and has a longer recovery window.
Multiple moves that Radahn uses in his second phase (Radahn, Consort of Miquella) have also been adjusted. Radahn is now easier to follow when the screen is filled with Miquella’s light-based incantations, which no longer obscure the action or the boss’ whereabouts.
FromSoftware’s changes to Promised Consort Radahn/Radahn, Consort of Miquella come after months of complaints from Shadow of the Erdtree players, who slammed the boss fight as a low point in an otherwise beloved expansion to Elden Ring. Players didn’t merely criticize Radahn’s overwhelming and frenetic attack patterns, but that they often had to resort to completely different play styles just to defeat the boss.
Radahn has a notable history of being nerfed in Elden Ring. In the base game, he appears as Starscourge Radahn, a boss that was similarly criticized for being too difficult in his original form. FromSoftware adjusted Starscourge Radahn less than a month after Elden Ring’s original release, but later reversed some unintended changes to the boss’ damage and hitbox sizes. Starscourge Radahn became a point of pride for Elden Ring players, some of whom like to boast that they defeated him pre-nerf, a trend that will almost assuredly continue with the latest changes to Promised Consort Radahn/Radahn, Consort of Miquella.
The rest of version 1.14’s changes are largely focused on weapon, magic, and skill adjustments. You can read the rest of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree’s new patch notes below.
